Saving Energy and Your Refrigerator

Refrigerators are one of the costliest appliances in your home since they constantly need power to keep your food fresh. Therefore, it is important to keep your refrigerator at the correct settings. Refrigerators should be set to 36-38 F while freezer temperatures should range from 0-10 F.

It may be difficult to figure out how to place your refrigerator at the correct setting since temperature controls are not labeled in degrees. Overcome this by placing an appliance thermometer in a glass of water at the center of the refrigerator and checking the temperature after 24 hours. Adjust the refrigerator controls until your unit is at the correct temperature. You can do the same with your freezer by placing a thermometer between two frozen packages and following the same steps. Remember, these controls will gradually change as your appliance ages so periodically re-check your refrigerator temperature.
