Many people do not know the story behind Valentines Day. It’s quite interesting. February is often called the month of love. The story that’s told happened in ancient Rome, Claudius the ruler felt single men were better soldiers than those with wives and children. Having to defend his boarders, he outlawed marriage.
Valentine was a Catholic priest who considered the ban on marriage unjust, so he secretly performed marriages. When it was discovered, Claudius had him imprisoned for breaking the law. The Catholic Church made Valentine a saint for his sacrifice, and chose February 14th, the date of his death as the day on which he would be honored. That’s how we came to have Valentines Day!
At the Fuel Fund of Maryland, we see love expressed not only in words but in actions – through the generosity of donors like you.
Many families across Maryland face the cold of winter with no way to pay for heating. Your support becomes more than just assistance. It becomes warmth, comfort, hope, dignity, and it truly connects us.
Connection is what makes our community strong. Every gift you make is a reminder the community is built on compassion, and that love is strongest when shared.
Love sometimes appears in the tiniest of ways or repeatedly for many. Have you considered joining The Power of 12? www.fuelfundmaryland.org. This is an easy way to show love through your monthly gift with “setting it and forgetting it”. What about gifting $14 a month (more love if you’re able) in honor of February 14?
Love in action is your gift, keeping the heat on for families who otherwise struggle through freezing nights and cold blustery days. Heart in the community reflects the heart of Marylanders every time you make a gift. Neighbors caring for neighbors, strangers becoming allies and compassion turning into resilience. We are so fortunate and because of you……. We see Valentines Day all year.
