Handling Life One Day at a Time

Jordan and Alex have built a life together based on hard work, mutual support, and a shared commitment to giving back to their community. Jordan works long hours as a retail manager, while Alex serves as a dedicated classroom aide supporting students with special learning needs. Their days are full, their hearts are big, and they’ve always prided themselves on making things work – always together.

But despite both working demanding jobs, the rising cost of living slowly began tightening its grip. Month after month, the couple watched their bills grow while their savings shrank. Everyday essentials: groceries, gas, medication which kept climbing in price. To fill the gaps, they turned to credit cards, hoping it would only be temporary.

Instead, the debt kept piling up.

One afternoon, after a long day at work, Jordan opened their mailbox to find something they had never seen before which was a BGE turn-off notice. A cold wave of panic washed over both of them. They had always managed, always found a way, always stayed afloat. But this felt different.

“The thought of losing our utilities terrified us – especially this winter – it’s cold,” Jordan shared. “We were exhausted, overwhelmed, and out of options.”

Unsure where to turn, Alex remembered hearing about the Fuel Fund of Maryland from a coworker. Although hesitant at first since they had never asked for help before they decided to visit the website that night. Reading the stories of others who’d faced similar hardships gave them courage to apply.

Within days, they received the news they desperately needed: they had been approved for assistance. For the first time in months, they felt their shoulders relax.

“The Fuel Fund was a blessing when we needed it most,” Jordan said. “Their compassion and respect reminded us we weren’t alone. They helped us keep our home safe while we worked on getting back on our feet. To know that there are people out there to help people like us is amazing.”

Alex added, “It was humbling, but also healing. The Fuel Fund treated us with dignity. They reminded us that asking for help is sometimes the strongest thing you can do.”

Jordan and Alex are rebuilding step by step. With their utilities stable and the crisis behind them, they’re focusing on regaining their financial footing and restoring hope in their home.

And once they’re able, they’re committed to giving back which will empower other households facing overwhelming moments that they can find the same support that carried them through theirs.
