Nancy Johnson is a 38 year old single mom who lives in Baltimore County. Her children are 3, 7, 10 & 17. Nancy works as a full-time Uber driver. Unfortunately, her husband passed away in 2016.
While working and raising a family on her own, the bills began to mount for Nancy. She received a turn off notice for her utilities in July and as the arrearage mounted, her power was eventually turned off.
This had never happened to her before. Where does she go? Who does she call for help?
Nancy began to navigate the maze of social services. Without power, their food spoiled. Clothes could not be washed. And night time dangers became even more apparent.
“I was just dumbfounded on what to do,” said Ms. Johnson. “All of our food had spoiled and I had to throw it out. Thank goodness we had enough hot water in the tank for us to bathe and batteries in the flashlights”.
The Johnson household was on Day 4 without power when Nancy connected with the Fuel Fund of Maryland. In less than 24 hours, their power was restored.
“I have never experienced that type of customer service or help before – ever,” exclaimed Ms. Johnson. “The Fuel Fund is our savior. My children now have clean clothes, food and a safe home. You are truly a safety net; especially for those of us who have encountered a tough situation and just don’t know what to do or where to go,” she added.
